Nowata Chamber of Commerce
As I type this, I still find it hard to believe that we are approaching our 10th
annual tournament this year.  I am very proud of what we have accomplished for
many reasons.  First of all, we are continuing to help kids achieve their goal of
attending the college of their choice as they pursue a higher education.
Secondly, the tournament continues to be successful year in and year out which
is a tribute to all of you that are able to participate.  And thirdly, it provides a
great opportunity for friends and family to gather once a year to honor the
memory of someone that touched their lives while having a great time and
supporting a worthy cause.  It is something to be very thankful for.

The tournament will take place again this year at Nowata Country Club in
Nowata, OK, on Saturday, September 25.  This is our only fundraiser of the year
and with help from each of you, we should have another great event.  Please
see below for you how you can help and what our schedule looks like for this
year as it has changed.

For those of you new to this event, my father, Terry Hessong, passed away in
2001 after a brief bout with leukemia.  To honor him, family and friends
established a scholarship fund in his honor for graduating seniors of all high
schools in Nowata County.  To date, we have awarded nine $4,000 scholarships
and will be awarding a tenth in the spring of 2011.  This year’s recipient was
Emily Handke of Oklahoma Union High School.  Past winners have included Sara
Cowan, Amy Branham, Amber Houser, Jana Dunstan, Tom Hughes, James
Gose, Keeley Gibson, and Miriah Panther.  We also have a $1,000 Exceptional
Achievement Grant and this year’s recipient was Meghan Gibson.  Past winners
include Lacey Ford, Bethany Covey, Geneva Anders, Blaine Stacey, Spenser
January, Katie Smith, and Sidney Noble.  That makes 16 students that we have
helped so far in their pursuit of a college education.  I’d also like to thank our
scholarship committee for their continued diligence and skill in selecting the
recipients.  They have done a tremendous job over the years and we greatly
appreciate the work they do in making tough choices year in and year out.  The
members are Sandy Fry (chairperson), Phyllis Willis, and John Carroll.

Here’s how you can help!

·         Play in the golf tournament or come up for the event.  The event doesn’t
work unless you participate!

·         Become a tournament sponsor for $250.  You will receive signage in the
tent area and clubhouse to be viewed during check-in, lunch, silent auction, and
dinner and will be recognized during the awards presentations.

·         Become a hole-sponsor at the tournament for $100 per hole.  You will
receive signage on a tee box.

·         Join "Kool’s Club" with a donation of $25 or more.  We will acknowledge
your support at the tournament and add you to a mailing/email list keeping you
updated on the Fund's progress.

·         Donate an item for the silent auction, such as rounds of golf, meals,
collectibles, autographed items, sports equipment, paintings, new clothing,
services, etc.  Anything that would have value is appreciated.  And, even if you
have something with a corporate logo on it, we will use it in the tournament.
People like to get stuff!

·         Volunteer your help in the planning and execution of the tournament.

Our schedule is:

·         9:00 a.m. - 18-hole scramble

·         1:30 – 3:30 p.m. - lunch and silent auction

·         3:30 p.m. - 9-hole “fun” scramble

You’ll notice a slight change from last year. We have moved back the start to 9:
00 a.m. to give our friends driving in from out of town that morning a little more
time to get there.  Also, we have lengthened the lunch and auction time as we
are not doing the dinner at night this year.  The longer slot at lunch will give
everyone more time and we will still have plenty of daylight to play the 9-hole
scramble that afternoon.  Rumor has it that some big ol’ hamburgers will be
served at lunch, so come hungry!

There will also be breakfast, raffle prizes, and gifts for your participation as well
as a silent auction with lots of great items.  One of the best things about this
tournament is that there is no required entry fee.  Just come out and play or
watch and contribute whatever you can, no strings attached.

As you can see, there are lots of ways to lend your support.  This is strictly a
volunteer organization with no paid employees and all donations go to the
scholarship fund except for a few costs we incur in hosting the tournament.
Cash drives the scholarships, so your donations are appreciated.  However,
auction items will generate cash at the tournament, so they are just as important.

Please don’t feel any pressure to donate.  Only contribute if you can.  We
appreciate your support and thoughts either way and we’ll hit you up again next
year!

You can send your donations to me at 3985 Summit Ct, Fairview, TX 75069, or
to the Terry Hessong Scholarship Fund at Regent Bank, P.O. Box 432, Nowata,
OK 74048, attention John Woolman.  You can also talk to John about making
your reservation in the tournament if you will be able to make it.  If you have
auction items, please contact me by email (mhessong@yahoo.com) or by
telephone, (214) 405-7678.  It should also be noted that we have moved the
funds generated over the years to the Tulsa Community Foundation for
investment purposes.  You will receive a tax receipt for your records from TCF
after your check is deposited.

Thanks again for your support.  We have truly turned a negative event in our
lives into a positive one and are very proud of our progress and the lives we
have affected.  Please be a part of it if you can.  Thank you very much.
